Touristic information on Sarsina >>    


The city of Sarsina has ancient origins.

Founded by Umbrian people between VI and IV Century b.C. in 266 b.C. was conquered by Rome . After this year it became a federate city and thus, Town Council.

Sarsina was the place of birth of Tito Maccio Plauto, born in the year 250 b.C. Plauto was the greatest latin playwright and his 21 plays left are still acted throughout the world, besides in Sarsina of course, in the “Arena Plautina”.

At the end of 3 rd Century and the beginning of 4 th in Sarsina lived Saint Vicinio, first bishop and patron of the City, whose fame as miracle worker and as exorciser is kept until nowadays.


The first stay of the tour must be the stately Basilica Cathedral of Romanesque style dating back X-XI century. It is situated in the main square dedicated to the latin playwtight Tito
Maccio Plauto.

Inside the Basilica people can receive the Blessing by “ la Catena di San Vicinio ”, an iron collar going dated back to the Saint bishop, according to a millenary tradition.
Up to now the “Catena” is used for blessing catholic people and attracts thousands of pilgrims per year; in ancient times the “catena” was the instrument used by the Saint, towards people occupied by a demonic spirit.

The National Archaeological Museum holds the old history of the Roman Sarsina: inside the museum all the stuff is from the nearby area, specially important monuments brought back during the excavations of the necropolis Pian di Bezzo. Among them the “ Mausoleo di Obulacco ”, a funeral monument dated 1 st century b.C., the “ Mausoleo di Rufo ” che biggest sepulchral monument, the “ Trionfo di Dioniso ” a large polychrome flooring mosaic and many statues among which the beautiful Attis.

Ancient Roman Forum
In the north side of the square, a gallery drives directly to the Forum, paved with tables of veronese marble. At the left of the excavation it is possible to see the crater of an ancient furnace, apt to burn the marbles to produce lime.
